Because a crack NASA team will totally be able to go for 3 years without needing birth control for other reasons :P&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yes it does seem like quite an invasion of personal choice, but then again, for astronauts, I imagine all sorts of incredibly invasive things become commonplace necessities, before they even leave the ground.  I doubt there&amp;#39;s a group of people on earth who&amp;#39;ve been as comprehensively measured, monitored, scoped, phlebotomoized, and catheterized as astronauts.
